This novel struck me as being more about the detective, Maria Kallio, than the crime. Maria is not clear about her direction in life. Her job as a detective is a temporary assignment. She's working on a law degree but even seems ambivalent about that. She's lonely, but doesn't want the bother of a relationship. A cat would do, but she's too busy to get one. Yet for a half-hearted detective she's dedicated and works long hours. She has a sense of humor, too, and enjoys putting her feet up on her desk and pretending to be Philip Marlowe. I enjoyed Maria's personality and her interactions with her bosses and assistants. The police really want her on board, because they need more women. The captain notes condescendingly that she seems to be able to keep up with the boys. This feels to me like quite a realistic picture of a smart young woman doing police work in Finland. -- Patto, Amazon Vine Reviewer

My First Murder (The Maria Kallio Series), by Leena Lehtolainen

Maria Kallio has just been assigned her first murder investigation. To prove to herself and her squad that she has what it takes to be a detective, she’ll have to solve the death of Tommi Peltonen.

Found floating facedown at the water’s edge of his Helsinki villa, Tommi had invited his choir group to spend a weekend at his retreat. But beneath the choir’s seemingly tight-knit bonds seethed bitter passion and jealousy.

As Maria sets out to determine the difference between friends and foes, she uncovers the victim’s unsavory past—and motives for all seven suspects. Now it’s up to her to untangle a complex set of clues before the killer strikes again.
