Amazon reviewer Kay Hayes says in her review:
No Marley and Me here. No chapter after chapter of dog bonding and love ultimately leading to dog death. There is no excessive pulling on heart strings to engage dog lovers. No reliving the loss of a beloved dog - for those of us who have been down that path before. This is a dog love story of a different sort.

The story is special because it begins with a dog lover's passion, search and rescue (SAR). It develops into someone forming a special relationship with a dog that has a special gift and a special purpose. Charleson has a gift for describing dog expression and dog language that is both endearing to dog lovers and generally entertaining. Both dog and author come across as genuine. The story feels very real, if just a bit embellished. The result is nothing ground breaking. It is nowhere near "Hey, did you read..." but it is worthwhile and fun for dog lovers - without relying on overly emotional themes. Puzzle is a working dog who loves her job. Charleson is a dog lover with a passion for SAR. Scent of the Missing is the story of their journey, from puppyhood to forming a SAR team.

An unforgettable memoir from a search-and-rescue pilot and her spirited canine partner

In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, Susannah Charleson clipped a photo from the newspaper of an exhausted canine handler, face buried in the fur of his search-and-rescue dog. A dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, Susannah was so moved by the image that she decided to volunteer with a local canine team and soon discovered firsthand the long hours, nonexistent pay, and often heart-wrenching results they face. Once she qualified to train a dog of her own, she adopted Puzzle, a strong, bright Golden Retriever puppy who exhibited unique aptitudes as a working dog but who was less interested in the role of compliant house pet.

On the product page, there are more pictures of Puzzle and a Q&A with the author.
