Topping the list is Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove, which many readers regard as the classic Western novel.

Other Westerns recommended by our readers include:

• the Holmes on the Range mystery series, by Steve Hockensmith (the link goes to a collection of seven stories)
• Robert B. Parker's Appaloosa series
• Any of the Westerns by Ralph Cotton

In addition, KindleBoards member gspeer advises that "Anything you can find by Elmer Kelton, Jory Sherman, Frank Roderus, or Richard S. Wheeler will never disappoint you in Westerns."
