Officer Jones, by Derek Ciccone. (Still free?)

" I thought this book was excellent! It was easy to read and the character development was easy to follow. I kept telling myself, I would read one more chapter then go to sleep for the night, but I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to reading more from this author." -- Amazon reviewer

As the fearless international correspondent for GNZ News, JP Warner has always risked his life to beat the competition to the story, and received all the notoriety and riches that comes with it. But an event makes him realize that there's no end to the chase, and the further he runs, the more he loses himself. So he decides to leave the jaded industry, and returns to the idyllic Connecticut town he grew up in, hoping to rediscover the person he once was.

But any chance to find peace shatters when he looks into the eyes of local policeman Kyle Jones. JP sees the same look he's seen in the many fanatics he's covered over the years. And soon finds himself on a collision course with Officer Jones, while also battling the forces within himself, as he races to cover the biggest story of his life.

The Genesis (Blood of Ages, #1), by K. L. Kerr. (Still 0.99?)

"I clicked with this book almost instantly. Within a very short time I found myself caring about the main character and wanting to know more about her and the new world she was about to step into. It's a story revolving around Catrina, a young girl who's thrust into the vampire world at a breakneck pace. K.L. Kerr doesn't allow the reader much time to breathe during the first several chapters, which I loved. The book may have been a little too long but it had all the vampy goodness and great writing that I'd been looking for. The author is also talented with action scenes and there's plenty to devour. It reminded me a bit of Jim Butcher's style at times. It was so nice to be reunited with bloodthirsty, intelligent vampires." -- Amazon reviewer

A Stolen Power. An Unstoppable Corporation. A Vampire God.

The vampires of Dayson City are preparing for war. Having lived in constant fear of the Archway Corporation for decades, desperation has forced them into action. Their solution is to bring the First vampire, Alistair, back from the dead, a warrior famed for eradicating entire armies in the name of his kind.

For fledgling vampire Catrina Malinka, the fabled return of some unknown deity falls low on her list of concerns. Between fending off strangers trying to kill her in her dreams, or trying to rein in an uncontrollable power that no one else even understands let alone shares, Catrina is forced to fight her assumed role in the war against Archway, which threatens to send her down a path she doesn't want to travel.

The first book in The Blood of Ages series, "The Genesis" is an urban fantasy about the inescapable nature of Fate and the corruption of power.

The Story of THE RAG! (St. Mary's Today Newspaper), by Ken Rossignol. (Still 2.99?)

"There was a time when journalists were true newsmen and newswomen. When names like Royko, Mencken, Wicker, Reston and Frank Reynolds symbolized the true mission and art of journalism. They were not pretty but true journalism is not pretty and each felt the punlic had "a right to know". Today, Journalists have become another type of performer or entertainer, complete with agents and make up artists. The sad state of the "media" makes Ken Rossignol's new book THE RAG so very enjoyable and compelling. It is a salve to those of us who value true newspeople and journalism, and proof that it still exists, albeit, not nearly as common as it used to be. The Story of THE RAG is a brilliant and cutting story of the newspaper ST. MARY'S TODAY." -- Amazon reviewer

In the short course of less than one year, a small-town newspaper which was run on a shoe-string was featured on the front page of two major newspapers and on network news, all due to covering the news with loud flashy headlines that 'shouted' the news rather than boring its readers to tears. In short, the news made news.

That was just the beginning, before long the newspaper would be the target of an organized effort by a county sheriff and his deputies and a candidate for states attorney to clean the paper off newsstands the night before an election and result in a landmark First Amendment case which is now the law of the land.

"The incident in this case may have taken place in America, but it belongs to a society much different and more oppressive than our own. If we were to sanction this conduct, we would point the way for other state officials to stifle public criticism of their policies and their performance. And we would leave particularly vulnerable this kind of paper in this kind of community.
Alternative weeklies such as St. Mary's Today may stir deep ire in the objects of their irreverence, but we can hardly say on that account that they play no useful part in the political dialogue. No doubt the public has formed over time its opinion of the paper's responsibility and reputation. If defendants believed its attacks to be scurrilous, their remedy was either to undertake their own response or to initiate a defamation action. It was not for law enforcement to summon the organized force of the sheriff's office to the cause of censorship and dispatch deputies on the errands of suppression in the dead of night."
