Free and bargain Kindle books! (Monday Mar 25)

Here is today's selection of free and bargain Kindle books!

Let's start with three highly-rated - and free - Kindle books!

Unsung Giant, by Jennifer Pendon. (Still free?)

While Thor gets all the attention in most other literature, Unsung Giant tells the tale of his brother Loki, an Asgardian god who is more often depicted as an evil, cunning, mischievous trickster. But is that really Loki's true nature? Download this fresh take on Norse mythology, free today.

"Unsung Giant is a vivid and exciting page-turner that really brought characters of Norse mythology to life. Characters are strong (what else could we expect from godly creatures), very well developed and alive and I was able to imagine them and relate to them effortlessly. I love when book is written in a way that moves me and stays with me after I read it and Jennifer Pendon wrote that kind of novel." -- Amazon reviewer

Since dawn of humankind's awareness, we have recorded history in the form of drawings and writings, developing habits of storytelling to express what we see. Though what man sees and how he interprets are not always the same.

Loki, Asgardian god of Norse mythology, known as the God of Mischief and Trickery, is victim of historical and literary misconception - one who is pictured as a god who loves to wreak havoc and leave behind strings of misfortune. Unsung Giant is a story to lay all wrong accounts to rest.

Unsung Giant is a tale of an unlikely Asgardian hero, torn between doing what his mischievous
ways demand, and what is expected of him, being the son of a King. Loki, since gianthood, has always been branded as one who does not think for the good of others. The Nine Worlds, including our own, are on the brink of destruction, and only one can bring about salvation.

What would you do, if the power was in your hands' "Loki has both the Mjollnir and the teningur lifsins; two very powerful weapons he could keep and use for his own purposes. The thought of wielding such power is very enticing, even for one who has a strong resolve."

As the book goes, "Even the All-Father could not help but beam at his younger son's impulsive nature. Well, Loki would not be Loki if he became insipidly predictable." Loki and Thor's filial affiliation are finally put to the test, from birth through to Ragnarok, end of the Nine Worlds, as we discover the true nature of this misunderstood giant.

In this Military Sci-Fi, Sergeant Justice is killed in a combat operation... until centuries later his body is reclaimed from a frozen lake. Sporting over 50 five-star reviews, this is the first of the Peace Warrior trilogy, and free today.

"The plot sounds a little like Demolition Man, but this book takes it to another level. It gets inside the mind of a soldier and his desire to save man kind. I agree it does stall in a few places, but still well worth the read. A strong start from the author who draws on his experience in the military. Its good to see former soldiers using their experience to expand the minds of future generations. Good work." -- Amazon reviewer

THE FIRST BOOK IN A NEW SERIES --> The Witch Narratives Reincarnation(Land of Enchantment Trilogy Book 1) is BEST FANTASY New Mexico Arizona BOOK AWARDS finalist 2012! --> Ghosts of the Black Rose (Land of Enchantment Trilogy Book 2) is now available!

A novel about the unlikely friendship between a devout Catholic and a reluctant witch. A book about loyalty, friendship, and the depth of love.

Belinda Vasquez Garcia came across a photograph of a Native American girl standing between her mother and aunt. All three were witches, and she was intrigued by the haunted eyes of the young witch. She thought about a girl being forced to follow in her mother's magical footsteps and join the family business, so to speak..."Sticks and stones may break my bones, but humanity will never break me," -- so claims the witch, Salia, but she was born with a soft, all too human heart that even being an outcast won't harden. Salia is a sister, granddaughter and daughter of witches. And she is a half-breed.

There is a portrait in the house at the bottom of Witch Hill. Salia looks out of the picture with haunted eyes. She is pale because her mother pinches her arm. But it is Salia's grandmother who dominates the picture. She is 110 years old but appears to be a teenager, holding out in her hand an ordinary-looking rock, a piedra imán, a rare shape-shifting stone, allowing her to bathe like in the fountain of youth, to be immortal while others around her age.

Salia longs to be ordinary like her only friend, but when Marcelina is threatened, Salia must use magic to save her. Revealing her powers leaves Salia vulnerable to the fanatical Catholic society, the Penitentes.

The Land of Enchantment series shines with the little-known world of Southwestern witchcraft, which gives this historical series a compelling twist and a refreshing breath of originality. This first book begins in the Roaring 20's, a time when illegal liquor flowed like oil and women's hemlines were shockingly shortened.

A FEW INTERESTING FACTS - Did you know that...
  • About 80% of the magic in The Land of Enchantment series is practiced by Southwest witches. Witches in the Southwest flash into fireballs and soar across the sky, as recorded by witnesses in witch trials.
  • La Llorona is a legendary witch called "the weeping ghost", who is known throughout the Americas by tens of millions. She has been seen by many as she haunts the rivers, lakes and drainage ditches.
  • The scary Penitentes have held power as a secret Catholic society for centuries in Spain and New Mexico.

In this highly-rated thriller novella, Grace discovers surprising - and dangerous - secrets about her ex-husband.

"JJ Oxendine has cranked out a very well thought out suspense novella in Intentional Stranger. I found this to be a page-turner, I read it in 1 day. The story flowed well and kept me coming back for more. It had a few super minor editing problems but they did not distract from the story. I eagerly await a sequel to see what comes of Grace's pilgrimage and discovery. Great modern imagery ("Eyes dark as Espresso", comes to mind.) The pace is solid and the story is interesting." -- Amazon reviewer

Shadow of Time, by Jen Minkman. (Still 1.49?)

A native American paranormal romance from Dutch author Jen Minkman. In the words of one reader, this is a book that "makes you a better person" for having read it.

"I enjoyed how the author used real Navajo words and customs. Frankly, I thought the author must have lived in the location of this book and personally knew about this culture, so I was floored when I found out she had never been in the United States. That was awesome research! And she also converted the book from Dutch into English (and American English at that!). Very admirable. I loved the storyline that included Hannah, Josh (the hot Native American), and Hannah's brother Ben. There were aspects of reincarnation, animal spirit guides, a wise medicine man, and skinwalkers (think of evil ghosts that can change into people or animals) that drew me in and had me hooked. There was romance, humor, horror, and history all wrapped in this book that made it a joy to read." -- Amazon reviewer

All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school. She joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There, she meets Josh again, Ben’s childhood friend from the Navajo reservation. The little boy from the rez has grown up fast, and Hannah can’t help but feeling more for him than just friendship.

But fate apparently has something else in store for her. And it’s not peace and quiet. Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the past of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. They seem to come closer – and why is Josh always present in her dreams?

Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you.

Emancipating Alice, by Ada Winder. (Still 3.99?)

The author describes this book as more "hen-lit" than "chick-lit," with its middle-aged protagonist. The family saga is currently a quarter-finalist contender for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award!

"This novel is simply wonderful. At times it is disturbing, always refreshing and at the very heart of this book is the raw emotion of a woman who never got the chance to experience the life she felt she deserved. Fiction can be many things, and every once in a while, can take you on a journey to a place where you forget that you are reading fiction at all." -- Amazon reviewer
