"Emma Frost inherits her grandmother's house just int he nick of time. While her mildly autistic son Victor is excited about the possibilities, her teenage daughter Maya is not - to put it mildly. Victor finds a haven in the trees in the backyard, and Maya finds hers in her teenage sarcastic attitude. There are 2 different stories being told her, which is where the books becomes really interesting. Astrid and Sebastian are living a life unlike anything you've ever heard of, even with today's atrocious news stories. When Sebastian's story seems to collide with Emma's and her family's, there's a race against the clock to find a killer. This book is fast-paced and mysterious and will have you guessing all the way to the end." -- Amazon reviewer

Avador Book 3, Enchanted Cottage, by Shirley Martin. (Still 2.99?)

"A fable, parable, and love story for everyone. Don't try to put this story into a slot. It won't fit. The characters and situations break free from any genre that might try to capture it. Ms. Martin has created a world that might run parallel to ours in many ways but it is magically different. There may be fuzzy, poisonous snakes and witches that can cause one to turn a blotchy purple, but at its heart, it is a world with the same problems and values as ours. People are just as torn, just as confused, just as thrown off track. Should they take the easy way and play it safe? Should they listen to their hearts? And if they do, how illusive is happiness? Is it worth fighting for? Along each bend in the road, comes a life lesson or reminder for the human in all of us. Aesop would love it, this story is right up his alley, except...and it is these exceptions that keep the reader turning the page. The Enchanted Cottage is wonderment and reality woven into one glorious tale. Read it." -- Amazon reviewer

Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker...and his cat., by Rick L. Huffman. (Still 3.99?)

If you buy (or already have) the printed book, the ebook is free, through Amazon's new Matchbook program.

"This was an amusing look at the life of an American trucker. Coming from Australia is seemed familiar but also wildly different to anything I know. The man loves his cat. I have all manner of respect for him and that cat after reading this memoir. It’s a hard life." -- Amazon reviewer

Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker...and his cat embarks on a one-year journey across the United States in an eighteen-wheeler. It runs the gambit from a wide-eyed rookie in Commercial Driving school to the eventual embracing of a new lifestyle at a dusty little truck stop in Crab Orchard, Tennessee.

Having made the transition to trucking after spending 20 years in television broadcasting, the author sets a comical tone from the very first chapter in a "fish-out-of-water" story. However, the dangers and challenges of life in a big truck are very real, and the book takes on a more somber tone to describe this aspect of road life. The reader is also introduced to little-known, funny, or unusual historical facts about some of the places visited while they are along for the ride. This book offers the reader an entertaining, yet candid, picture of the life of a long haul trucker with a little slice of Americana on the side.

Another unique feature is the inclusion of a "traveling cat" in the story. The comical and, sometimes, poignant adventures of "Kitty" are interwoven throughout the book and promises to hold appeal for pet lovers.

The life of the American trucker still holds a bit of the rugged explorer's lifestyle. The trucker is usually far from home and uncertain what lies around the next bend. Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker is a book that touches into a cornerstone of a lifestyle few people know about, but that hides a passionate group that bears further study, namely, truck drivers.

Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker not only describes the realities of road life and entertains the reader with humor, it puts the reader directly into the cab (and the mind) of a truck driver. Similar attempts at describing the trucking lifestyle by other authors have fallen short of the mark. Either the author handles the topic clumsily, or authors who have no firsthand knowledge of life on the road in an eighteen-wheeler write it. Even worse, writers spend a few days, or weeks in the passenger's seat with a driver, and then claim expertise in their book. In contrast, this book provides a first-hand account of life on the road for the period of a full year by an actual trucker, who also happens to be a writer. This book puts the reader into the cab of the truck and takes them along for the journey while providing education and laughter while they are along for the ride. This breadth of outlook cannot be found among the books now available.

Opur's Blade (Prairie Winds Golf Course), by James Ross. (Still 1.99?)

Save $2 on this Kindle Countdown Deal!

"We all have dreams and the main character in this story knew what he wanted and went after it. Opur's Blade was full of surprises, highs and lows, funny parts and at times was very sad. I thought the character development was very good. I absolutely despised Opur's father, Owen. What a jerk, but at the same he was hilarious! I found myself laughing out loud at his antics. Although I couldn't help but scream at Rayelene (his wife) to just dump the loser. She was no great catch herself though. You find your self falling for Opur right away. He is an incredible young man. The last half of the book is about one of America's greatest golfing events - "The Classic" which you would think would be boring, but it is so not! Ross includes the drama of the spectators, the golfers, as well as the commentators. I was very interested in the play-by-play action and was rooting for Opur all the way. Without revealing more of the plot I'll simply say that Opur's Blade was an absolutely delightful book! This was my first exposure to this relatively new author and I think I will be reading more from James Ross." -- Amazon reviewer

A night of teenage passion leads to an unplanned pregnancy followed by a lower-middle-class struggle to make ends meet.

Like most mothers, Rayelene Purler envisions great things for her child. In an attempt to introduce her son to a slice of life the family can ill afford, she arranges for the stuttering Owen, Jr. to get free summer instructional lessons at Prairie Winds Golf Course on the east side of St. Louis.

After the first ball is struck on the driving range, head pro J Dub Schroeder senses a child prodigy in his midst. The lad becomes known as Opur for his propensity to sink putts with an old, worn-out putter that was gathering dust in the lost-and-found barrel.

Tragedy at home, a future without aim and a sudden love interest color Opur's journey. J Dub mentors the young man and shows him how the principles of golf can be applied to everyday life.

Follow the action as a young underdog fights for his dream on the hallowed grounds of America's greatest golfing event -- The Classic
