Farmers and Cannibals, by Eric James-Olson. (Still 0.99?)

Save $2 today on this Kindle Countdown deal!

"The story is a unique take on the dangers of an unchecked expansion of government and big corporate business in America. The plot is akin to a more simple take of Orwell's classic 1984 with reminents of more modern classics like District 9 and Avitar. The character descriptions and point of view are presented particularly well, with protagonist we are rooting for and antagonist, well sometimes we might be rooting for them too. The author uses a mix of biblical references, present day controversies and popular sci-fi themes to thicken the plot, advance the characters and keep the pages turning. This reader will be checking back to see what comes next!" -- Amazon reviewer

Enter the world of Farmers and Cannibals where limited resources, worldwide conflict, and great leaps in weapons technology have cut a deep fissure between those who have taken power, and those that struggle to survive on the margins of civilization. The deadly struggle continues as the dispossessed gather together, as the men and women robbed of their livelihood recognize the inherent power of their numbers.
Join Francisco Cain, Director for Security on Farm-Colony 984, as he finds himself in the center of the conflict. Bear witness as this tool for control, as this mechanism for power begins to recognize the hand that subtly controls his every action.

Bold, by Julia Swift. (Still 0.99?)

"Bold was a good, clean read with a great message. I liked that it's contemporary fiction, but not just a love story. I appreciated the focus on self-awareness and self-change. There was a lot of character growth, which is one of my favorite things to read about." -- YA Blogger Kelli of I'd So Rather Be Reading

Escape to the Highlands, by Rowena Williamson. (Still 0.99?)

"Marvelous! Good story with believable characters. Despite the occasional suggestion of supernatural at work, the story especially comes to life through marvelous scene and setting details, details which create a sense of being there in the aftermath of this pivotal event in Scottish history." -- Amazon reviewer

ESCAPE TO THE HIGHLANDS

On April 16, 1746, Ailis (15) and Liam (16) are caught in the devastating Battle of Culloden and meet in the aftermath as British soldiers scour the moor, killing survivors. Together with Liam’s Scottish Deerhound, Duncan, they hide until they can escape. The British are sparing no one--young or old, male of female--to make sure the Scots do not rebel again. This begins their terrifying journey into Scotland’s Highlands in search of safety.

Pursued by the English officer, Carstairs, whose cold voice they first heard as they hid near the battlefield, they are helped and betrayed by other Scots. They find safety for a while with men protecting Prince Charles Stuart, heir to the Scottish throne. But are they really being protected, or are they going to be used to lure the English away from Bonnie Prince Charlie?

Ailis and Liam take shelter in ancient stone circles, where Duncan sees things they can’t, and where Ailis has dreams that guide her. Liam, from a family of bagpipers, who had gone to Culloden with his father, to pipe the men into battle, sees that war is not the exciting thing he thought it was, and retribution after the war is destroying Scotland.

Always, as they travel, Carstairs seems to find them, and as the mountains grow steeper, the enemy always after them, they grow closer to each other as they endure hunger and fear, and hope begins to fade. And Ailis’s dreams grow more frightening.

The House of Worms, by Harvey Click. (Still 0.99?)

Save $3 today on this Kindle Countdown deal!

"For Macbeth's brew-mistresses substitute world-class chefs Poe, Vonnegut and the monumental P.K.Dick and you'll have some (slight)notion or whiff of the unique brew that Harvey Click's cooked up for us in HOUSE OF WORMS, whose brilliant first chapter had me hooked and wriggling for the duration from the line. There's no predicting what event or flavor is next to explode, yet it's all inevitable in retrospect. "You can't believe it"--and yet, alas, you most certainly will. A word or two for the squeamish: "Get over it! Clean your plate!" As for the rest, "Hang onto your sanity. Or, better by far, just let it go!"" -- Amazon reviewer

Dexter Radcliff’s elderly great-aunt owns an ancient Native American artifact called the Talking Horn that allows one to speak with the dead, and when Dexter’s carelessness causes the Horn to be stolen he is plunged into a nightmarish struggle with the Lost Society, a vast narco-terrorist network of occult assassins led by a dead sorcerer. But Dexter’s problems have just begun—soon he will have to contend with parasitic brain-eating worms, sinister Longevitals who can live a very long time thanks to a hermetic treatment, a “Twisted Zoo” containing among its horrific exhibits Dexter’s murderous atavistic twin, “spectreholes” that open spectral doorways to other worlds, and a hellish monstrosity older than mankind that is preparing to return to earth and return earth to primordial chaos.

Warning: this grisly novel is not for the timid. The first chapter entices the readers like a bloody fishing lure, and each following chapter drags them deeper and deeper into a swirling maelstrom of horror.

"A heck of a vacation! THIS BOOK IS AN OLD SCHOOL STYLE DELIGHT. The main characters are believable and easy to identify with.
