Profile: Sci-Fi author Chris Reher

In today's author profile, we're pleased to feature Chris Reher, author of Only Human, The Gods of Chenoweth, and other science fiction novels!

I am a first generation Canadian currently and out of necessity residing on planet Earth. In various biographies on book sites, I usually make some sort of comment about living in outer space. While obviously and entirely untrue, it does point to the fact that I’ve always found this planet Earth limiting. Too much gravity. Too much *normal*. There has to be something bigger than laundry and elections and who gets voted off the island.

When writing fiction, I have always left this planet to see what else, what *more* , is out there. Conveniently, it’s easy to simply make things up since there isn’t anyone around to dispute my findings. The law of physics can usually be circumvented in some fashion and people can come together in interesting and exciting ways not possible here on Earth.

My harshest review comment was one that accused my aliens of being too Human. Harsh, but true and entirely on purpose. Gene Roddenberry had it right when he insisted that his Star Trek aliens have eyes and mouths. No matter how exotic, if a reader/viewer cannot relate to an alien on some human level I may as well be writing about amoebas. On Earth.

And so, my current project is a Space Opera series about a distant part of this galaxy where a strand of our DNA, placed there by some mysterious means, has given rise to a variety of humanoid species. This thread carries along the adventures of Nova Whiteside, a Union pilot who isn’t as tough and infallible as you’d expect a space hero to be and who lets her passions do daily battle with her regimented life as soldier.

*Only Human* is currently available at Amazon and has been very well received. *The Catalyst* will be available in January. The third book in the series will hopefully be out in March.

I also wrote *The Gods Of Chenoweth*, a darker fantasy about the abuse of authority.

When not inventing improbable laser guns and poking into wormholes, I am a web designer and write non-fiction. In the past I’ve edited a movie review magazine and corresponded about the US art publishing market.

Frankly, taking a space ship through Trans-Targon is much more fun.

Blind But Now I See: The Biography of Music Legend Doc Watson, by Kent Gustavson. (Still free?)

This award winning biography delves into the life of famous music legend, Doc Watson. Pick it up for free today!

"I was fascinated by this book. How Doc crashed on couches on the road to send money home, even after he became well known. How Merle was more than just a rhythm guitarist. An extraordinary look at a national treasure." -- Al Price, Amazon reviewer

Before his death at the age of 89, Doc Watson was the true voice of Appalachian music. After being discovered in 1960 by folklorist Ralph Rinzler, the blind guitarist graced thousands of American stages with his down-home wit, deep knowledge of traditional songs, and his blistering flatpicking guitar. Over 52 years in the music business, Doc influenced every musician with a pulse, from Bob Dylan to Jerry Garcia, and from Gillian Welch to Pete Seeger.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK
“I never heard an off night from Doc Watson – ever, ever, ever.” – Taj Mahal

“When you listen to what Doc is doing on the guitar, it hits you right in the soul.” – Warren Haynes

“When you hear Doc Watson singing Amazing Grace, something else enters the room.” – Ben Harper

“Doc takes in the larger universe and makes it come out on the guitar.” – Bill Frisell

“I recorded ‘Strawberry Jam’ with Doc at MerleFest. After we played the set, I said, ‘Oh my God, that was as good as sex!’” – Michelle Shocked

“There isn’t a musician anywhere who isn’t saying ‘My God, I’ll never even get close to that.’” – Mike Marshall

“You can feel the joy in Doc’s playing and hear it in his voice and the way he talks to the audience. You can just feel the joy.” – Sam Bush

“Doc is a major link in the chain of American roots music.” – David Grisman

“Doc has an unwavering authenticity in his playing, in his singing, and in his character.” – Tommy Emmanuel

The Wolf's Moon, by Patrick Jones. (Still free?)

An ancient beast preys on innocent civilians . . . This chilling thriller is free today!

"Loved the story! The characters were engaging, and the suspense was kept high throughout. Combining elements of a number of action-related genre's, Mr. Jones has given us a very entertaining read." -- Bolverkr, Amazon reviewer

In “The Wolf’s Moon,” author Patrick Jones creates a spellbinding tale of an ancient animal that haunts the foothill towns of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. An unknown group of scientists has genetically engineered a Dire Wolf into the present day. Allegedly extinct, the ferocious beast preys upon the innocent people of Maple Hills.

To hunt and kill the beast, the town folk will have to rely on the tracking feats of Mark Lansdowne. He is a reluctant hero, still mourning the loss of his wife to illness. Relying on his rescue dogs and indefatigable hunting skills, Mark will set out on foot in search of the mysterious beast. Yet the hunter’s personal history and romantic entanglements will come back to haunt him during his search for the vicious animal.

Accompanying him on the hunt is his pal Warren Skruggs, who knew Mark when he was known as Michael Linden, a chapter of his history that he prefer be kept to the past. Adding to the intrigue are two beautiful, intelligent women who aid the hunter in his quest. Their looks and smarts would make the Bond Girls envious but Mark is still a grieving widower, unsure of how to move forward.

With its mixture of high-stakes hunting and personal and romantic intrigue, “The Wolf’s Moon” is a page-turner that will keep the reader captivated with its unexpected story twists. The thriller suspense novel is a real story grounded in the life and folkways of the Ozark Mountains not just another unbelievable werewolf story grafted onto the romance of the South.

Christmas in Wine Country, by Addison Westlake. (Still free?)

Get in the Christmas spirit with this fun romantic comedy - free today!

"Funny, laugh-out-loud, romantic comedy, combines a supportive best friend and perfect California wine country terrain as background for the main character, Lila, to explore and examine her life choices. Perfect holiday reading." -- cynbluerun, Amazon reviewer

A romantic comedy set in Northern California's wine country.

It's Lila's big debut as an event planner and the company holiday party is going to be her chance to shine. At a Tuscan-style vineyard near the Northern California coast in the perfect little black dress she's sure to impress commitment-phobe Phillip. What could go wrong?

72 hours later with no job and no boyfriend, Lila finds herself with all kinds of answers to that question. Like mistaking the glowering Jake Endicott of Endicott Vineyards for the groundskeeper. Or a new video on YouTube featuring Lila pawing her way through drunken karaoke of "Hungry Like the Wolf."

Solo on the romantic holiday getaway she'd booked for her and Phillip near the vineyard, Lila at least gets to visit with her old friend Annie who lives nearby in the coastal town of Redwood Cove. Drawn into the local bookstore with gleaming wooden floors and welcoming armchairs, Lila chats with the owner and impulsively accepts a job offer.

Sleepy, misty Redwood Cove is the perfect place for Lila to take a break from her horrible track record with guys. The only one she finds even remotely attractive knows her as the holiday party crazy lady. Ranked in Bay Area magazine's 10 hottest bachelors, Jake Endicott is just the type Old Lila would have wasted years pining after.

Join Lila on her year of comedy, adventure and self-discovery on the Northern California coast, with all kinds of ups, downs and misadventures and a full cast of small-town wine country characters. Thankfully, even the greatest misunderstandings can all be worked out with a little Frank Sinatra and mistletoe.

He Called Her 'Hat', That Tough Little Lady, by Myron C. McDonald. (Still free?)

A French woman makes the most of her life during the 1920's. This charming tale is funny and touching; get it free today!

"This is a great read as it takes the reader to an era in time when life was uncomplicated and people had to work hard to maintain their lives and survive. Not only will the reader learn a great deal about life at that time, they will be thoroughly entertained by the amusing tales of incidences and encounters lovingly depicted by her grandson. It is a truly engrossing and entertaining read, which will educate, make you laugh, think and cry." -- Mochalove, Amazon reviewer

"Her name was Harriette DePeele Corey Bair, a tiny thing, perhaps a half inch over five feet. She was quick, with the passionate, egocentric vitality I ascribe to the French--quick to respond whether in love or temper. She never left you long in doubt as to where you stood in her estimation and she was a shrewd judge of human nature. She was sensationally strong for her size, probably never weighed more than a hundred pounds, but she milked six cows by hand, night and morning, worked a garden of at least an acre and kept a house so immaculate it was the despair of all her female kin. She could lift her own weight without a grunt, loved off-color stories, brewed her own hard cider, raised her own wheat, danced on Saturday nights at the local town hall, and was vitally in love with life. After her first husband died, she married a man 20 years her junior. Tall, handsome and somewhat lackadaisical, Frank Bair worshiped her and did her every bidding."

From here the story takes off in amusing, sometimes hilarious, always entertaining true-life recollections of Hat's remarkable life in the early twentieth century, USA.

I was utterly captivated by the story -- it has intrigue, romance, wonderfully well drawn human characters, and a rich historical and mythological backdrop woven into its timeless plot. This is tough feat to pull off but Ms. Matthews does this seamlessly without ever sacrificing the sheer entertainment value of a good story! This book will stick with you long after you finish reading it and you will find yourself wanting more information on much of the history presented." -- Jill Carter, Amazon reviewer

Chicago economics professor Rob Harris knows he has it damn good: dream job, devoted wife, adorable daughter. But he risks it all when his first love, the exquisitely mysterious Selena, writes that she needs him - her terrifying dreams are coming to life.

Despite his doubts, Rob is drawn into Selena's haunting world of forgotten knowledge, ancient ritual, and relinquished rights. Eventually, he finds himself face-to-face with Jacobi, who will kill to keep hidden a truth that could change the world. As Rob's own concepts of reality crumble, so do his once-rigid views on nature, divinity, women's roles, and even love. To his amazement, he comes to accept that the greatest hope for us all may actually rest with Hollywood.

The Goddess Letters is a story of love and faith, and one man's unfolding relationship with both. A testament to passion of all kinds, it celebrates those who have the courage to discard the new in favor of the old, be it love, beliefs, or entire civilizations.

Kindle Fire Free App of the Day: Kunundrum

Today's Free App of the Day is Kunundrum
Originally $0.99

This is a puzzle game, where you try to work out progressively harder solutions to sending the little fireballs to the appropriate location. Graphics are simple but attractive, not retro as one reviewer says. 12 of 13 reviews now are four stars and above.

I like this kind of game...and I enjoyed playing it. Several reviewers say it is similar to Quell. The one one-star review says it's not similar to Quell. One reviewer complained about the number of different icons one has to remember, and there are a lot. They are introduced slowly, and you can read the FAQ accessed from the main screen to refresh your memory. I say this is a keeper. Some of the solutions are quite clever as to the order one has to do things in.

This app is compatible with the original Fire and with the Fire 4G. It looks great on the 4G.

To tell if an app works for your Fire HD or other Android device registered to your Amazon account, click on the above link and look on the right side of the web page. Amazon will tell you if it will work with your registered device.

Word games for your Kindle Fire: "Word Push"

We've received good feedback from our readers on our selection of word games for Kindle Fire. Here's another one: "Word Push," which  has over 40 five-star reviews!

This game is like a combination of Boggle and Tetris. You drag your finger across letters to form words, Boggle-style. Once you've formed a word, the letter tiles within that word disappear, and new tiles get pushed in - somewhat reminiscent of Tetris game play.

The goal of this game is to remove all of the gem colored letter tiles. The catch is, if you choose a gem colored tile letter, you need to use *all* of the same-colored gem letters within your word. This one will really get you thinking!

Letter pushes can come from any direction - top, bottom, left and right . Once you select a valid word, the letters disappear and new tiles are inserted depending on the push direction.

On the opening screen, there's a link to a YouTube video that shows the game play. I'd recommend watching that as it gives good hints on game play.

This is one of the few portrait-oriented games I've seen for Kindle Fire, and it works well in that format. We tested this game successfully on our Kindle Fire HD, and on our Kindle Fire (non-HD).

If you like Boggle and Tetris, you'll likely enjoy this game!

Unique! Great tile movement. Nice twist having opportunity to decide which way letters move. Makes you think more than just coming up with simple words. -- Joan Scribner, Amazon reviewer

It Rains In February: A Wife's Memoir of Love and Loss, by Leila Summers. (Still free?)

In this memoir of "unquestionable courage and vulnerability," Leila Summers touchingly writes a posthumous letter to her deceased husband. 26 five-star reviews, and free today!

"Poignant. It Rains in February outlines the fear, pain, love and agony she experience as he was sucked into a vortex of mental illness that eventually resulted in his suicide. What surprised me the most about this epistle is the gentle and honest tone of the writing. The author allows the reader into the most painful and personal moments in her life. She doesn't try to excuse her decisions or behaviour or the behaviour of Stuart, her husband. She simply opens her heart and lets it bleed over the pages. The result is a powerful, honest, loving remembrance." -- Dana, Amazon reviewer

On the 24th of February 2007 my husband, Stuart, drowned himself at sea, leaving me widowed with two young daughters aged six and four. I knew it wasn't an accident, even though the medics and police never suspected suicide. Stuart had been talking about ending his life for a year. His most recent suicide attempt had been only three weeks earlier. Afterwards, he explained that day as the most peaceful day of his life. Sitting next to the dam, he smoked his last cigarette. He drank a hundred sleeping pills and did a final check to make sure everything would look like an accident. The last thing he remembered was swimming out into the crystal clear water. He said that he was no longer scared of dying, that there was nothing scary about it. Living was the scary thing.

It Rains In February: A Wife's Memoir of Love and Loss is the true story of a husband's depression and obsession, not only with another woman, but also with ending his life. In this honest and heartfelt narrative, Leila Summers weaves a compelling tale of the year that led up to Stuart's suicide and the grief, profound loss and self discovery that followed. Although each suicide is unique, this book gives the reader an insider's view from one perspective by way letters and e-mail messages.

Forbidden Quest (Hypnotic Journey), by Alaina Stanford. (Still free?)

This engaging fantasy is a free download today!

"This was a great read that follows the theme of starting in the real world and then moving into the fantasy world, similar to Terry Brooks series of Magic Kingdom for sale sold, but the way the characters get there is way different and things go wrong from the get go, escalating the suspense as they try to figure out what happened and how to get back on track. The plot moves at a strong, steady pace and the action scenes are great. The author also uses a really interesting twist in character development that I can't go into, cause that would spoil the surprise. This story is definitely worth the read. I just bought the sequel, so I've got to go start reading it now. " -- Scott Weaver, Amazon reviewer

Wouldn't it be cool to suddenly have the battle skills of a seasoned warrior? Wouldn't that be even better if the battles felt real but there was no physical risk to you? Wouldn't it be perfect if the hypnotist in charge of your session was not insanely evil and using you as a weapon in a plot for revenge?

Four friends, two in love, two in hate enter into a Group Hypnosis study attempting to introduce fantasy adventures to small groups. They are promised a video game type of adventure rescuing an Elf Queen from her crystal prision as elf warriors, a sorceress and a fairy. As soon as they fall under the good doctor's spell they begin to realize the adventure is more real than they could have ever imagined. They find themselves in a hostile world they can't seem to escape from.

"This is a great fairies tale. Both my 4 and 7 year old granddaughters love it, with delightful illustrations which take you into the fairy world. Leaves you waiting for the next adventure." -- Rach, Amazon reviewer

“What I wanted to do was bring traditional style fairy stories up to date by placing them into our world” Debra Danu Matthews 2012

Enter the magical world of the Far Tree and meet the extraordinary fairies that live there.

See their tiny houses built on stilts among the leaves of the Far Tree. Go deep into the hollowed out tree to the grand hall and follow the many tunnels that take you to the wonderous workshops as they go about their everyday lives.

In Tilly’s Mission, we meet Tilly, a ditzy, accident-prone, naughty fairy as she goes on her first mission as a tooth fairy.

Everything that can go wrong - goes wrong! She must make things right for both a young girl who has lost her first tooth and the fairies of the Far Tree.

With the help of her friend Chooo, a cloud hopping Blumpalong, and the young girl called Chloe, they set out on an adventure to find the missing tooth. Can she complete her first mission and avoid returning back to fairy school yet again?

The second book is underway and will continue the stories of the Far Tree fairies and introduce new fairies and some strange enchanting characters.

The Fairy Tales of the Far Tree are to be a series of books that explores the fairy world in our modern times. How they use our ideas, mimic technology, interact and live their lives.

Although a series of books they are also written as individual books that can be read independently too.

Constructed in a traditional style of writing that appeals to both parents and children alike! It begins with an outline of the enchanted world and then focus’s on one story of the Far Tree Fairies. This could be a story of an event or an individual fairy or a few fairies. The first book and story is a fast paced and has humour woven through.

The illustrations are enchanting and fresh. They are undertaken using detailed pencil sketch images that are again constructed in a very traditional style initially and then worked in Photoshop to add colour and vibrancy to the final images. The final illustrations are very contemporary and new.

Holding Breath: A Memoir of AIDS' Wildfire Days, by Nancy Bevilaqua. (Still free?)

Recently listed on "Who Says That Serious Literature Is Dead?", this book is the telling of a caseworker who falls in love with her client, a heroin addict dying of AIDS. Free today.

"Definitely a page turner. While it does cover the life of a man who died of HIV and how he spent the end of his life, what had more impact for me was how a mere 8 months in the late 80s left the author in a world of filled with grief for the next 16 years. How honest she is throughout it. It felt like she has been drowning in this sadness and is finally - and thankfully - coming up for air. You can't help but wish her well and hope this is the beginning of a new chapter for her." -- NYC reader, Amazon reviewer

When they met, David was a 41-year-old heroin addict, homeless and dying of AIDS. The author was a 27-year-old, self-absorbed, bar-hopping would-be poet--and his caseworker. In 1989, in New York City, there was nothing "manageable" about AIDS, and David would have only eight more months to live. Something about him drew her to him until the boundary between "caseworker" and "client" dissolved, and she fell in love with him. Living together in secrecy in his little Lower East Side studio for those final eight months, they hoped for the impossible until it was impossible to hope any more. In the short time they had together--a time that would change them both--they formed a relationship that would, sixteen years later, unexpectedly and with ferocity come back to haunt the author, send her into the full-fledged grief that she had denied herself when David died, and change her life once again.

"This story was one of the quickest reads I've experienced in the last year. The reason was because I simply couldn't put it down. The main characters were both believable and their motivations were well-developed. There were also enough red-herrings to keep me guessing about the next move on the parts of Ethan and Mariana and I could not have guessed where they would wind up. I never saw the end coming! that made it all the more worthwhile of the time I spent reading it. You are quite the storyteller. I look forward to reading more of your well-crafted books." -- Gary Rose, Amazon reviewer

The justice system is just a system, not a just system.

Sentenced to fifteen years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, Ethan Rafferty has one thing on his mind - payback! With his time up, the ex-con is free to pursue his mission of revenge. The District Attorney, Mariana Clark, who, during the trial suppressed evidence that would've exonerated him, is the focus of his vengeance. Intent on making her life miserable, Ethan employs a variety of tactics to antagonize and torment the woman.

Unable to retaliate through the courts, considering her role in the previous trial, Mariana decides to fight fire with fire. Soon, their feud escalates to a point where neither imagined it would go.
Which one will prevail, Ethan or Mariana? Who will win? Can either? Or, are both of them bound to a destiny produced by a Miscarriage of Justice?

"The author has been a personal trainer for more than 20 years, and he has an impressive list of celebrity clients. So he knows what he's talking about. Anyone who needs to lose weight but just can't stand vigorous exercise, or can't find the time to exercise properly, should read this valuable book." -- Walter Ballenberger, Amazon reviewer

For many people, the title of this book sums up how they feel about working out: Exercise Sucks!

But the reality is that losing weight and keeping it off through diet alone is virtually impossible, which is why most of us fail. To lose the weight and get that lean body you dream about you have to eat well and be active on a regular basis. New research reveals that most of us sit an astounding 7-11 hours every day!

Exercise Sucks! is based on the new science of sedentary studies, which points to the startling conclusion that “exercise” as we know it may not even be the most effective way to lose weight.
This sure-to-be-controversial book will show you how to:
•Change your habits and bring more regular activity to your day, allowing you to burn far more calories than you would “exercising.”
•Bring “real food” that is delicious and healthy back into your life easily!
•Learn movements that can be done at your desk or kitchen counter that will improve strength, flexibility, balance and energize you without breaking a sweat
•Choose foods that will help you lose weight without really trying
•De-stress your life to make weight loss easier and faster
•Make the most out of a short workout program to lose weight fast

Exercise Sucks! will help you lose the weight you want to lose with little or no time spent doing the thing most people hate… exercise.

Amazon reviewer FancyPants says "Just when you think you've got a handle on the frustrating and bizarre world of Wayward Pines, Blake Crouch throws you for a loop (literally, on occasion). It's only natural for readers to try to figure out the why and how of a mystery/thriller, but Crouch tosses in a grenade of sci-fi that will blow your mind, so don't even waste your brain power trying to deduce the undeducible. Just go along for the ride. The ending is vaguely reminiscent (and not in the way you might assume) of the end of Stephen King's 'The Dome', which I personally didn't love, so I can't say it was my favorite ending of all time. BUT...it was completely unexpected and creative, which makes up for any "Oh, come on" feelings I may have had."

Secret service agent Ethan Burke arrives in Wayward Pines, Idaho, with a clear mission: locate and recover two federal agents who went missing in the bucolic town one month earlier. But within minutes of his arrival, Ethan is involved in a violent accident. He comes to in a hospital, with no ID, no cell phone, and no briefcase. The medical staff seems friendly enough, but something feels…off. As the days pass, Ethan’s investigation into the disappearance of his colleagues turns up more questions than answers. Why can’t he get any phone calls through to his wife and son in the outside world? Why doesn’t anyone believe he is who he says he is? And what is the purpose of the electrified fences surrounding the town? Are they meant to keep the residents in? Or something else out? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the world he thought he knew, from the man he thought he was, until he must face a horrifying fact—he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive. Intense and gripping, Pines is another masterful thriller from the mind of bestselling novelist Blake Crouch.

Blake Crouch on How the Television Series Twin Peaks Inspired Pines On April 8, 1990, the pilot episode of Mark Frost and David Lynch's iconic television series, Twin Peaks, aired on ABC, and for a moment, the mystery of Who Killed Laura Palmer' held America transfixed. I was twelve at the time, and I will never forget the feeling that took hold of me as I watched this quirky show about a creepy town with damn fine coffee and brilliant cherry pie, where nothing was as it seemed.

Kindle Fire Free App of the Day: The Lost City & Bonus Pick

Today's Free App of the Day is The Lost City
Originally $0.99

I've got this one already, I actually paid for it soon after I got my original Fire.

753 reviews, 593 of them four stars and above.  You explore a mystical landscape, trying to find a lost city in this graphical adventure. One reviewer compared it to Myst.  I really liked it, the graphics were gorgeous and it's supposedly been upgraded since I bought it last year to work on the Fire HD.

However, I tried to run it just now on the 4G and it crashed.  It's consistently crashing after the second story screen, and from the reviews, I'm not the only one.  As KindleBoards moderator Ann in Arlington says, "Given the overall GOOD reviews -- If you're at all interested, I'd say to go ahead and get it because it's likely there'll be an update addressing the crashing problem on the 4G fire.  It started just fine on the HD7. . . .and it looks amazing.  . . . I'll probably be wasting a lot of time with this."

Since this is crashing for the 8.9" Fire owners, I've got a KBAAD:

This is Air Patriots, and I stayed up way too late last night trying to get a gold medal on the third round.  It's a "tower defense" type game, only instead of towers you use airplanes to try to kill the baddies before they overrun your territory. You direct the planes by drawing on the screen.  Nice twist on the usual gameplay.  A few more instructions would be nice, but otherwise, I found it quite entertaining.  (She types blearily...)

These apps are compatible with the original Fire and with my Fire HD8.9.  To tell if an app works for your Fire HD or other Android device registered to your Amazon account, click on the above link and look on the right side of the web page.  Amazon will tell you if it will work with your registered device.

Have fun!

Author profile: Edward Lorn

In today's author profile, we're pleased to introduce you to horror author Edward Lorn!

Edward Lorn is an American horror author presently residing in the southeast United States. He enjoys storytelling, reading, and writing biographies in the third person.

Once upon a time, during a session of show and tell, a seven-year-old Edward Lorn shared with his class that his baby brother had died over the weekend. His classmates, the teacher included, wept while he recanted the painful tragedy of having lost a sibling. Edward went home that day and found an irate mother waiting for him. Edward's teacher had called to express her condolences. This was unfortunate, as Edward had never had a baby brother.

With advice given to her by a frustrated teacher, Edward's mother made him start writing all of his lies down. The rest, as they say, is history.

Edward Lorn and his wife are raising two children, along with a handful of outside cats and a beagle named Dot. He remains a liar to this day. The only difference is, now he's a useful one.
