From the author of bestselling thriller "Seed", it's time to meet "The Neighbors"..!

From the author of Seed, here's a new psychological thriller from Ania Ahlborn. ("Seed" has over 150 five-star reviews!)

Discovering a new female, horror author is a rare find indeed, especially one who truly understand the subtlety of a good scare. The Neighbors is a chilling look at what can potentially lie beneath the surface of classic Americana. Under the circumstance, calling Ania Ahlborn a "breath of fresh air" is probably about as appropriate as a fit of giggles at a funeral. So instead let's just say she's surprising and skin-crawly and as much fun as getting the snot scared out of you at your local haunted house." -- Black Gate

"The Neighbors will have you guessing until the very end. The characters are full of mystery and intrigue that keep you glued to the pages... I love mystery, suspense and thriller and this book delivered it all." -- Beautybrite

The Neighbors by Ania Ahlborn

Andrew Morrison sacrificed everything—his childhood, his education, and the girl of his dreams—to look after his alcoholic mother. But enough is enough, and now he’s determined to get out and live his life. That means trading the home he grew up in for a rented room in the house of an old childhood friend—both of which are in sorry shape.

The only thing worse than Drew’s squalid new digs and sullen new roommate is the envy he feels for the house next door: a picture-perfect suburban domicile straight out of Norman Rockwell, with a couple of happy householders to match. But the better acquainted he gets with his new neighbors—especially the sweet and sexy Harlow Ward—the more he suspects unspeakable darkness beyond the white picket fence.

At the intersection of Blue Velvet and Basic Instinct lies The Neighbors, an insidiously entertaining tale of psychological suspense and mounting terror by the boldest new master of the form, Ania Ahlborn.

Amazon reviewer Maddy's Mom says "This book "hooked" me right from the beginning when a young girl's life ends in the woods in Vermont. It kind of reminded me of Blair Witch. Then a school nurse, Kate who lives in Washington state comes back to her hometown in Vermont to care for her mother. Kate learns of the murder of the young girl and it brings back memories 30 years ago when she was a 5th grader and knew a girl Del who was also murdered. Kate is still bothered by what really happened to her friend so many years ago and starts reconnecting with events and people from the past that ultimately leads to closure in the end. Written in both the past and present, it's a great story and very hard to put down! Quick read. I look forward to more from this author."

Forty-one-year-old school nurse Kate Cypher has returned home to rural Vermont to care for her mother who's afflicted with Alzheimer's. On the night she arrives, a young girl is murdered—a horrific crime that eerily mirrors another from Kate's childhood. Three decades earlier, her dirt-poor friend Del—shunned and derided by classmates as "Potato Girl"—was brutally slain. Del's killer was never found, while the victim has since achieved immortality in local legends and ghost stories. Now, as this new murder investigation draws Kate irresistibly in, her past and present collide in terrifying, unexpected ways. Because nothing is quite what it seems . . . and the grim specters of her youth are far from forgotten.

More than just a murder mystery, Jennifer McMahon's extraordinary debut novel, Promise Not to Tell, is a story of friendship and family, devotion and betrayal—tautly written, deeply insightful, beautifully evocative, and utterly unforgettable.

Sister of Silence, by Daleen Berry. (Still free?)

This extraordinary memoir has over 70 five-star reviews. Read Daleen Berry's anguishing and ultimately uplifting journey.

"Daleen Berry thought she was happy--until Eddie. Berry doesn't present herself as a saint, nor Eddie as a complete monster. A former FBI agent sets the theme: Acquaintance or marital rape is still rape. Berry is an engaging writer, her style fluid, with welcome touches of humor and sustained tension throughout. A seldom-seen perspective." -- Kirkus Writing

"Sister of Silence could not have been easy for award-winning journalist Daleen Berry. Berry reveals her dark secret with clarity and frankness in hopes of saving others from making her mistakes. Berry's story is not an easy read, though her prose is strong and her memory acute." -- Clarion Review

A "riveting" and "compelling" true story, this memoir unfolds fast and leaves you longing for more. Following a shotgun wedding, the author found herself married to a coal miner who kept her barefoot and pregnant. Sister of Silence is the amazing story of her personal journey: how she went from being a teen mom to an award-winning journalist determined to break the silence that shatters women and children's lives.

Kirkus Reviews calls Berry "an engaging writer, her style fluid and easy to read, with welcome touches of humor and sustained tension throughout."

ForeWord Reviews says Berry's "prose is strong and her memory acute."

Kenneth V. Lanning, a retired FBI special supervisory agent who spent more than twenty years teaching about family violence at Quantico, Va., wrote the foreword for Sister of Silence. He says it's "ultimately a story of survival and hope." Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell, a Johns Hopkins University nursing professor and one of the country's leading family violence researchers, calls Sister of Silence "wonderful!"

Campbell was the first professor to place the book on her syllabus. SOS is being taught at the University of Louisville; Dr. Jean Shimosaki, LCSW, MSW, a Bay Area therapist, is using it with her patients, as it provides "a step-by-step guide for healing."

In 2006, an excerpt of SOS took first-place in the Appalachian Theme category at the West Virginia Writers' Competition, and was banned at Livermore High School in California and removed from library shelves as "Banned Book Week 2011" began. It has been featured at "Hope For the Future: Ending Domestic Violence In Families," hosted by the AIA (UC Berkeley), on The Bob Edwards Show (Sirius XM Radio), and on In A Word, a literary show produced by TV30.

The author is a California native who grew up in Preston and Berkeley counties in West Virginia, and went to work at The Preston County Journal. Among her many awards was one in 1990, when she won a first-place award for investigative journalism. In 1997, she worked for The Dominion Post, covering welfare reform. Among her awards are two second-place honors for her 2007 weekly columns in the Cumberland Times-News, one of which was born from SOS. Berry's articles about Lashanda Armstrong, the mother who drove her van into the Hudson River in 2011, killing herself and three of her four children, appeared online at The Daily Beast.

This is what a few people are saying about this book and this author:

"Almost never is an interview subject so open or so candid about the most intimate details of the most horrible moments of her life. Daleen is a very brave women and I hope her story will help other girls and women . . . Daleen you are a magnificent storyteller." --Bob Edwards (Author of Voice in the Box: My Life in Radio)

"In Sister of Silence, author Daleen Berry gently guides us through the dark corridors of her life, so that we can emerge in the light, as she has courageously done, with a sense of hope, authenticity and courage. Sister of Silence is a brave book, written from the heart. It's a must read for the brave-hearted." --Asra Q. Nomani (Author of Standing Alone: An American Woman's Struggle for the Soul of Islam)

"Sister of Silence is authentic, compelling and necessary." --Richard Currey (Author of Fatal Light)

"For marketing purposes, nothing better can happen to a book than having it banned. A banned book is a sure sign that you've done something very right." --Lee Maynard (Author of Crum)

"A dramatic memoir told in a matter-of-fact, yet strikingly compelling, manner." --Appalachian Heritage (Summer 2011 Issue)

What if mythology isn't myth? The ancient Greeks told fabulously detailed stories involving unbelievable creatures - monsters dominating all tales from that time. Were they just highly imaginative, or was their inspiration from somewhere else?

His brother has been mysteriously killed and within moments the United States Military appear at his door, literally dragging him from his home. 49% of Americans believe their government officials are honest. I don't know these officials, or their supporters, but I know their secrets, and 49% of Americans are wrong.

My employers pay me well to be right, to know things others can't. But I don't know why they brought that boy in, strapped to a stretcher, barely conscious. He asked me for help when I could give none.

I'm a wealthy spy, a talented artist, a martial arts black belt, and a prisoner. They tell me that on my eighteenth birthday, I will be released, free to go to the college of my dreams. It's my eighteenth birthday, and a man in black is at my door. I know he's not here to free me.

I know, because I can read minds.

My name is Sam, and this is my story.

So begins the tale of Sam and Drake--from the time they link minds, forging a bond that leads to an unconventional romance--to their fight for survival against the corrupt, twisted organization known as 'Rent-A-Kid.'

Becoming Elizabeth Darcy, by Mary Lydon Simonsen. (Still free?)

Mary Lydon Simonsen combines her love of history and the novels of Jane Austen in writing re-imaginings of Miss Austen’s work.

"Interesting concept. What a trip she had into the past and how she made some important contributions to the two character I loved best in Pride and Predjudice. It was like a completion to the story we all love from the Masterpiece Theatre series. " -- Mary Smullen, Amazon reviewer

In 2011, American Elizabeth Hannigan, suffering from the flu, falls into a coma and wakes up in the bed and body of Elizabeth Bennet Darcy. Beth soon realizes that the only way back to her life in the 21st Century is through the Master of Pemberley, Jane Austen's Fitzwilliam Darcy. But first she must uncover the dark secret that brought her to Pemberley in 1826 in the first place.

Becoming Elizabeth Darcy is a story of love, loyalty, and loss, where a modern woman is called upon to resolve the problems of Jane Austen's most beloved couple.

"Best YA fantasy I have read in a while! I strongly recommend this book to YA readers who are looking to be lost in another time and place. While it doesn't have the steamy scenes that an adult book does there are a few moments of passion that lead me to believe that the next book will blow-me-away! My first five star review on Parajunkee is complete. Seriously, when is book 2 coming out? Must go stalk...." -- Lori Parker, Amazon reviewer

Shadow of Stone (The Pendragon Chronicles), by Ruth Nestvold. (Still free?)

Reader reviews are enthusiastic for this historical fantasy, based in Arthurian times in Great Britain. Free today!

"Solid historical crunch and sturdy flavor of ancient Britain. If you liked the thoroughly researched battles and journeys of the characters in Yseult, the fun continues here in Shadow of Stone. Cador still longs for Yseult, Yseult still has a heart full of love despite Drystan's passing; they are full of passion, but it is tempered with a melancholy or sad wisdom."-- K. B. Lincoln, Amazon reviewer

For over ten years, there has been peace in Britain after Arthur and his warriors soundly defeated the Saxons at the battle of Caer Baddon. But sometimes peace is deceptive ...

After a series of hard winters and famine, an alliance of dissatisfied northern kings attack the rich cities of Southern Britain. But in the years of peace, Arthur's army has grown soft; jealousies and trivialities rip once strong alliances apart. Cador, who is mockingly referred to as "farmer king," must go to war again. The threat to their way of life throws him together with Yseult, the woman he has secretly loved since he was a youth.

But can their politically expedient marriage help bring peace to Britain again? Or will it only lead to further conflict? As betrayals both real and imagined shake the foundations of former British unity, Cador and Yseult must try to negotiate their own personal peace. Who will survive the upheavals to come? Will Britain rally once more behind a common leader to fight off the common threat?

Skid, by Doug Solter. (Still free?)

A Young Adult romance, that certainly meets the definition of a "fast-paced" read! Free today.

"Skid by Doug Solter is a book about a young race car driver named Samantha. I didn't know much about racing before I started it, but it was very enjoyable. My favorite thing about this book is the main character Samantha - I found her refreshing and funny and naive and she acted like a typical teenager who is obsessed with something in this case racing. The book was a fast-paced drama that I really enjoyed reading." -- Arden, Amazon reviewer

RACING IS A GAME THAT KISSES DEATH ON THE LIPS...

Samantha Sutton drove the car that killed her dad. Now the seventeen-year-old can’t rest until she becomes the racing champion her dad molded her to be. Samantha exploits the system and earns a spot on a German racing team struggling to be relevant against the elite teams of Formula 1.

Samantha pushes herself, pushes her car, pushes her luck at 200 miles per hour. She battles Emilio Ronaldo, seven time world champion and Ferrari racing god. A hero to young girl, but now a rival to a young woman.

To keep herself sane, Samantha relies on her best friend Manny. But she doesn’t know quite what to do about his deep feelings for her. She would love to ask her sisters for advice, but they won’t talk to her. Not since Samantha told them the truth about Dad’s accident. The truth about that dark and rainy night.

Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. Blind turns cutting deep into the lush forest of the Ardennes. Drivers have died on these turns. Samantha must beat Emilio here to be crowned world championship. But she smells the moisture in the air. Samantha knows that Formula 1 drivers are expected to race flat-out, even in the rain.

And that thought terrifies her.

What readers have been saying on Goodreads...

“What I loved about Samantha is her strong personality. Even when she was being bullied by the others in the Formula 1 world, she never backed down; she stood up for herself and showed the world that women had talent in racing too.” - Erfa

“Actual writing was good, especially writing the events as seen through a teenage girl's eyes. Some writers just can't nail that, so I applaud Solter for hitting it right on the mark.” - May

“Overall it was very enjoyable, well paced, and fascinating to a reader not accustomed to the racing world. I hope to read more from this author in the future as I am sure it will be well worth my time.” - Megan

Kindle Fire Free App of the Day: Kung Fu Fight

Today's Free App of the Day is Kung Fu Fight
    Originally $0.99

OK, this has ok reviews...7 of 9 reviews are four stars and above.  It's a retro looking platform game where your little 8-bit Kung Fu fighter jumps, runs and fights as he tries to rescue the farmer's daughter.  No one star reviews, one two star review complains about the controls, as do others.

Not a horrible app, but I thought it was time for another KBAAD.  Here's a useful one as we're all doing a lot of ordering:  Shiprack.

I have a couple of different tracking apps that I used on my old Fire; this one is pretty easy to use.  It's a shipment tracker.  Ignore the one star reviews; they all have to do with a prior version that was loaded in the Amazon store that was not compatible with the Fire.  That's apparently been fixed...I had no problems with this app on my old Fire or on my Fire 4G

You can send emails with tracking numbers to your Shiprack account and it will automatically start adding them, or you can manually add a tracking number.  I click on the app and it shows me the list of things I've ordered and what the status of each is. Yes, that's right--I have a list of things coming, doesn't everyone?

This app is compatible with the original Fire and works on my Fire 4G.  To tell if an app works for your Fire HD or other Android device registered to your Amazon account, click on the above link and look on the right side of the web page.  Amazon will tell you if it will work with your registered device.

An unlikely hero, in the wrong place at the wrong time! Jim Fusilli's "Road to Nowhere"

This insightful novel of suspense and violence comes to us from acclaimed journalist and author Jim Fusilli. In "Road to Nowhere," he introduces an unforgettable and unlikely hero to the ranks of contemporary American fiction.

Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time more than once - Sam witnesses a horrific crime and this is the story of what happens after he goes to help a young woman who was attacked.

Terse prose, noirish highlights, quirky characters, family issues - all come together in a violent little read that I enjoyed. I will be keeping my eyes open for more of Fusilli's work. -- Cheryl Stout, Amazon Top 1000 reviewer

Road to Nowhere by Jim Fusilli

For years the drifter haunted the background of American life, roaming the side streets and highways that crisscross this vast country. Cool and handsome, with a single teardrop scar and a knack for silence that keeps the world at bay, he is a man alone.

That all changes on a rainy night in Chicago, when he witnesses a brutal assault on a young woman. By the time he reaches her, the assailant is gone, leaving a trail that is all too easy to follow. But playing the good Samaritan may be more trouble than it’s worth, when his moment of conscience hurls him into a shadowy world of violence, intrigue and deception.

Caught between duty to his fellow man and the anonymity of life on the road, the Samaritan could walk away. But when his estranged teenage daughter is threatened, he will make his choice—and never look back.

    Meet the Author

Jim Fusilli is an American writer. He serves as the rock and pop music critic of The Wall Street Journal and is the author of six novels. A native of Hoboken, NJ, he lives in New York City.

Fusilli's debut novel, the mystery "Closing Time," is the last work of fiction set in New York City published prior to the 9/11 attacks. The following year, Fusilli's mystery "A Well-Known Secret" addressed the impact of 9/11 on the residents of New York City. Two novels for adults followed: "Tribeca Blues" and "Hard, Hard City," which Mystery Ink magazine named its 2004 Novel of the Year.

In 2005, Fusilli wrote "Pet Sounds," his tribute to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys' classic album. Described as "an experiment in music journalism," the book combines the rhythm and emotional weight of his fiction with the often-unorthodox observations of his music criticism for the Journal, for whom he has written since 1983.

Fusilli served as the editor of, and contributed chapters to, the award-winning serial thrillers "The Chopin Manuscript" and "The Copper Bracelet." His novel for young adults "Marley Z and the Bloodstained Violin" was published in 2008.

Fusilli has written and published many short stories; in several, he developed Narrows Gate as the setting, depicting the city in different eras. "Chellini's Solution," which appeared in the 2007 edition of the Best American Mystery Stories, features Narrows Gate in the years following World War II. "Digby, Attorney at Law" portrays the fictional city in the early 1960s. "Digby" was nominated for the Edgar and Macavity awards in 2010.

Fusilli is married to the former Diane Holuk, a senior public relations executive. They have a daughter, Cara, a graduate of the New School.

The Girl Who Swam to Atlantis, by Elle Thornton. (Still free?)

Elle Thornton's writing is described by reviewers as "exquisitely lyrical." It's 1957, and 12-year old Gabriella's friendship with Marine Hawkins just might put him in grave danger.

"I love this book! A young girl grows up on a military base in North Carolina in the racially charged 1950s, struggling to prove herself to her father, the General, and to find out what happened to her mother. She makes friends by following her heart, without regard to race or age. This book is beautifully written." -- Noel-Anne Brennan

Nearly everything important in twelve-year-old Gabriella's life that summer of 1957 can be traced to the river. On the North Carolina military base where she lives, she meets the African-American Marine Hawkins by the river's brown-green water. Hawkins, a servant in the kitchen of her father's quarters, becomes her swim coach and a person she can talk with--even about the tragedy of the youth Emmett Till. The fourteen-year-old was lynched two years earlier, his body thrown into Mississippi's Tallahatchie river. But this river, her river, isn't a place of death. Emmett's spirit is alive in its waters. It's a place of magic.

At the river Hawkins helps her find her strength and her place in the world. Emmett helps her find her heart.

Emmett had been murdered for whistling at a white woman. Could her friendship with Hawkins endanger the tough Marine? It doesn't seem possible. Until a sudden storm on the river changes Gabriella's life--forever.

When abusive parents raise brilliant children, you might end up with a saint, or a killer…or one of each.

Little Deadly Things is the place where science meets the psyche, where humanity’s future is in the hands of a madwoman and the woman that must stop her.

The seeds of an apocalyptic race—to save mankind or to destroy it—were sown in the earliest years of two scientists. Young Eva Rozen witnessed her sister's brutal murder, and barely escaped with her life. She found refuge from madness in the orderly world of science. Twenty-five years later, this master of nanotechnology is the world's richest woman... and the most dangerous.

Marta Cruz also endured a troubled childhood. Her mother’s death and her father's incarceration left her an orphan, and a crippling disease left her in pain. Marta's refuge? A tropical rain forest where she discovers plants with miraculous healing properties under the tutelage of her shamanistic grandmother.

The two girls meet in high school and form an uneasy friendship that lasts through college. Eva wants power, profit—and Marta's husband. She offers to fund Marta's public health dreams in exchange for the ailing physician's knowledge of plant-based medicines. Together, they build the world's largest nanotech manufacturer.

When the unstable Eva has a psychotic break, and attacks the people who rely on her for survival, only Marta can stand between Eva and the death of millions. But Marta is a healer, not a fighter, and must rely on her husband and teenaged son, a boy who faces a life-or-death challenge well beyond his years.

Little Deadly Things is set just a few years in the future, yet the story’s technology comes directly from today’s laboratories. Here is a chilling look at a future that is already on our doorstep—and a study of the two women who will decide the fate of mankind.

Here's a bargain Kindle book, available for 99 cents today!

Darklandia, by T.S. Welti. (Still $0.99?)

Unique, descriptive, cinematic... this warmly-reviewed book follows 17-year-old Sera in Manhattan in the year 2147. A bargain book, from one of KindleBoards most popular authors!

"This is one book where I absolutely did not see the ending coming. The last couple of chapters are a huge twist, one that had me nearly in tears. Not that the ending was a disappointment; far from it. It was not the ending that I was expecting, but it was a perfect way to end the book. I can say that the ending felt like it absolutely destroyed me; it was so good, but I felt like it left me wanting more when there was none. The way that it was all brought together in the end makes me wonder if there will be another book. Even if there isn't, Darklandia is a fantastic addition to Ms. Welti's growing list of novels, and would be a great addition to anyone's personal library. I recommend this book wholeheartedly." -- Elizabeth Embleton, Amazon reviewer

    Manhattan, 2147

Seventeen-year-old Sera Fisk gleefully celebrates the death of her 114-year-old great-grandmother, the last Atraxian alive who still remembers what New York was like before Felicity.

There is only one principle of Felicity: Suffering is optional. Those who disagree or forget this principle, as Sera's father did, are detained and "purified". Through the use of the Darklandia virtual reality and mandatory water rations, the Department of Felicity has transformed metropolises all over the country into happy, obedient communities.

Inspired by her great-grandmother's last words, Sera stops drinking the water rations and is soon recruited by Nyx into a rebel organization in the midst of planning a full-scale attack on Darklandia. When Nyx attempts to override the Darklandia system, he stumbles upon shocking information about Sera and her family. After years of living in a haze of virtual reality and drugs, Sera finds herself running from a powerful surge of raw emotions and a government agency intent on keeping reality a secret.

Mature Young Adult / New Adult for mature themes and violence.

Note: Due to reader demand, a sequel to Darklandia will be released in Spring 2013.

    Praise for Darklandia

What blew me away the most is that even though I was noticing clues that should have led me to the shocking ending, I didn't make the connection until the very end. Masterfully done.
    - Terri Oda, Amazon reviewer

The author's prose is unique and so perfectly descriptive. Vivid scenes were created in my mind as I read, very cinematic. I could easily see this becoming a film.
    - Amazon reviewer

If there is one thing to be said about Darklandia, it is that you should go and pick it up, right now. If you enjoy dystopian fiction of any flavor, chances are high that this book is one you will enjoy.

No Good Like It Is, by McKendree R Long III. (Still free?)

This western novel is well-regarded with over 20 five-star reviews. Free today!

"A fast moving engaging Civil War epic. Following Captain Dobey Walls and his right hand man, Sergeant Major Melton through their adventures puts you in the saddle in the middle of the action of Terry's Texas Rangers and the old west. The author's visual characterizations and graphic depiction of the battles and the country that our nation was based on is both enlightening and heart warming. I highly recommend this novel and look forward to the sequel." -- Pisces, Amazon reviewer

"No Good Like It Is" is a winding tale of violence, tolerance, and changing racial acceptance. In it, two hard-bitten Confederate cavalrymen barely survive the Civil War, riding with the famed Eighth Texas Cavalry. They then must struggle home to the Texas Panhandle, while accumulating enough misfits and strays to populate a small village. This rowdy historical fiction is filled with rich characters, both real and should-have-been. A sequel, "What Goes Round," is in the works.

But she works for his Gran and has just learned the senior was duped by a professional swindler. Renny has to tell Con what happened before she marries another man and leaves forever.

The Doomed Colony of Mars (The Maurice Series), by Daniel Barth. (Still free?)

An entertaining work of children's fiction that instructs as it entertains. Author Dr. Daniel Barth is a Reagan Scholar, and winner of the prestigious Amgen Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, as well as the Science is for Kids Fellowship.

"This is an excellent series, and this installment does not disappoint. Maurice is a curious and courageous character and very easy to relate to. Shannon is well-characterized and very sympathetic for girls; not bubbly or boy-crazy, but in for every part of the adventure. The story is compellingly written and raises fascinating and tantalizing possibilities about the space program and the future. It's a great choice for a kid who is bored by narrative but interested in science- they can be sucked in by both here and not disappointed. Wonderfully imaginative and skillfully written, this book can entertain nearly anyone." -- Meghan Elison, Aamazon reviewer

In this realistic science fiction book, Maurice and his ecologist mother are shanghaied into going to Mars to try and save the Eureka Colony, which is on the verge of ecological collapse. On the way to Mars, Maurice meets Shannon Kappel, the daughter of an Irish flight engineer who has also been recruited in the rescue effort. Sparks fly as the cultured girl from Ireland meets our frontier boy from the Moon!

On Mars, Maurice becomes convinced that the problems plaguing the colony are not just accidents; he begins to see spies and saboteurs around every corner. Could someone living in this remote colony hundreds of millions of miles from Earth really be trying to destroy the environment upon which all their lives depend?

Mars is a challenging environment for Shannon, who has never been to space before; and for Maurice, who has never spent much time on a planet with real weather. Can they survive Martian storms and dust devils as they explore craters, ancient lake beds, and the fabulous Mariner's Valley on Mars'

Maurice continues to look for evidence of sabotage, but there doesn't seem to be any motive for one of the colonists to destroy their own home, and no one is quick to believe a notorious prospector and buggy pirate from the Moon! The tension mounts as Maurice and Shannon continue to explore; Maurice could be right about the saboteur - dead right!

The Doomed Colony of Mars is the second book in The Maurice Series, a science fiction series of books geared towards teens. If you're looking for more fantasy fiction for teens, also read the first book, Maurice on the Moon. And stay tuned for the third book, coming soon!

    Author profile: Anne Holly

In today's author profile, let's meet romance novelist Anne Holly!

I resist talking about myself, normally, though I should be getting used to it as I write more and more of these sorts of introductory author posts. Yet, it’s never easy to decide which angle to pursue. Do readers care that I’m a Canadian writer, living in Ontario? Or that I teach at a university in my day life, and have a four year old son? Or that I started writing because I’m the child of an avid reader (thanks Mum!), and because we didn’t have a TV as a kid? There are a lot of things about me to trot out for one of these posts, and it’s hard to choose which ones to cover.

I guess a place to start as at the beginning. My first novel, Strings Attached, was more than ten years in the making, which might be some sort of record for a romance. I wrote it as a college student way back in 2000, but it got shoved in a drawer when I went to grad school. (Literally, shoved in a drawer, since it was hand written.) I sent out one query for that book, to Silhouette. It was an admittedly lousy query, and it earned me my first rejection form letter.

Unlike most writers who love to tell you how undaunted they were by their first rejection, I have to admit it daunted the heck out of me. I was thoroughly and utterly daunted. And that was the end of my writing career (or so I thought).

Luckily, I was still too vain to actually toss the book, so I kept the manuscript. I later re-read it and typed it up, but it generally languished for a decade. Then, in 2010, I had finally come to a crossroads. My “terminal degree” had been achieved. The big PhD. The moment I’d been working toward since I got on that first school bus, clutching my Big Bird lunch pail. But was I happy? Not in the slightest! Graduating from school for the last time sent me into an identity crisis worthy of any teen drama. What was I, if I wasn’t a student?

Then, sitting one day and pondering such questions, I recalled The Novel. Hey, maybe I was still a writer! I had a summer and a term before my teaching gig started, so why not fill it with doing something with this book?

Well, I did. I re-read, re-wrote, edited, brushed up, etc, and I sent it off. I found a small epub. No agent required! What did I have to lose? Long story short, they accepted it, and it toddled off into the world in 2011. I was pleased. But, it reignited the old addiction. Now, unhindered by my dissertation and school papers, I returned to writing for the joy of it. I ended up writing a lot more than I had planned, and publishing many more than that one book. I have recently released my second novel, Textbook Romance, and about seven shorter works in between. Now, I’m even venturing out of romance and considering my self-publishing non-romance debut.

So, the Anne Holly Story? What is that? I think the only way I can describe myself, and the only “angle” that matters, is that challenge is essential, and crossroads are as exciting as they are terrifying. For now, I’m happy. But seldom content.

"Edge of Shadows" - Book 1 of Cege Smith's paranormal romance series!

Lots of mystery! I was pleasantly surprised by Edge of Shadows. The opening chapter starts out strong with Ellie packing up to leave her husband Jake. During most of the book I was trying to unravel the mysteries that plagued Ellie, Jake, and the mysterious "Linda." -- Cynthia E., Amazon reviewer

Edge of Shadows (Shadows #1) by Cege Smith

Beware what lurks in the darkness of Cege Smith's paranormal Shadows series...

Darkness has been Ellie Coulter's constant companion since her parents' untimely death when she was eight, and she harbors a secret that never fails to remind her that she's different than everyone else. Fresh off a failed marriage with a man who harbored his own dark secrets, Ellie shut herself off from the world as a form of self-preservation.

For months, Ellie's protective bubble includes nothing but her coffee shop, her few friends, and her dog. The attention of a handsome young doctor, David Mitchell, pushes her out of her comfort zone, and Ellie warms to the idea that she may have found a risk worth taking.

Then one of Ellie's friends abruptly leaves town; entrusting her home to Ellie's care. The house has its own mysterious past that draws Ellie into a tangled web of deceit. Her ex-husband resurfaces with premonitions of Ellie's death. And suddenly Ellie's life is being turned upside down yet again.

Something old and evil has found Ellie, and wants to keep her all to itself.

    Meet the Author

The written word is fundamental to who I am and what I do. When I was a kid, I escaped reality by diving into books that perhaps were sometimes too mature for me, but gave me a glimpse of "what if". I had the typical wild imagination and I was able to dream up all sorts of crazy new worlds to sink into based on the latest book I'd read.

I made my first foray into writing my own stuff when I was twelve. I wrote about two sisters trapped inside a haunted house that was shifting in time. Through high school I carried a little black book with a velvet cover in which I wrote all sorts of teenage angst poetry and ideas for short stories. Then I "grew up" and writing took a back burner to building a career.

*Cue usual music for yearning for things unfulfilled.*

The thing that kicked my butt back into writing was National Novel Writing Month, which I found in 2004. I'm not sure who was more surprised when I finished my first novel that year, me, or the characters I met in the story who finally found a home on a written page.

Since then I've written 4 additional novels and and 2 novellas and there is plenty more where that came from. I need to quiet the manic voices in my head! But whatever I write there always seems to be a paranormal element of some kind (ghosts, vampires, zombies, witches, wolves). The genre I land in seems to be more dependent on where the story is set, and I really have no issue with that.

I hope you'll connect with me here, on my blog, on Twitter, or Facebook and let me know what you think about my work. I'd love to hear from you!

Fractured Facade, by Elena DeRosa. (Still free?)

This suspenseful thriller is written as memoir. Free today!

"It is a very interesting, and brutally honest book. Anyone who has not lost someone or who has not dealt with law enforcement, courts or family issues might not feel the gritty integrity it took to tell this story but I have had some traumatic experiences and I believed and felt every word. You find yourself trying to guess how something is going to unfold, and shaking your head a lot. It is a good read." -- Sandra M. Saunders, Amazon reviewer

Marie's peaceful life in Virginia is shattered the moment she receives word from her brother: “I just got a call from a detective. Daddy’s dead.” Rushing to her family home in Brooklyn, New York, Marie seeks answers to her father’s mysterious death only to discover disturbing occurrences and encounter acts of betrayal.

After her questions are amplified and suspicions confirmed surrounding her father’s ex-girlfriend, Marie becomes frustrated by how oblivious so many had been, and continue to be, to the wily con-artist.

Inheriting her father’s scheming ex-girlfriend becomes a journey Marie never imagined she’d be forced to travel.

Written as memoir, and based on a true story, "Fractured Facade" is a cautionary tale for anyone concerned about a parent after the loss of their spouse. The survivor, often thrust into an unfamiliar world, can find it quite different from the dating scene of their youth; one where some people create facades to mask their true intentions. Sadly, loneliness can cause an otherwise intelligent person to behave foolishly.

"Fractured Facade" is the tale of a father’s death, a daughter’s life, and a sociopath’s vendetta.

A Fit for the Kings, by P. A. Milko. (Still free?)

Kam has been nanny for the King family for many years, but things are changing. Dive into the family relationships in this poignant debut novel.

"This is a wonderfully tender story about the loving relationship between a nanny and her children. The author weaves her story through the perspective of all of the people in her nanny life. As you read the story you become a part of the family; you will laugh and cry with the family." -- Kris, Amazon reviewer

Mary Poppins does not live here. The only magic is in the markers. It is though, a nanny's story. One not for the faint of heart.

A keen, detailed glimpse into the world of the Modern Day Nanny.

P.A. Milko's debut novel A Fit for the Kings is a realistic fictional novel based on the relationship between the King family and their long-term nanny Kam. It's a modern day tale with the twist of modern day drama.

The Kings live in the outskirts of Boston. They employ a dedicated and loving [albeit sometimes jaded] nanny named Kam. She's been with them for over eight years. Due to stress, burnout, and a dire weight problem, Kam's health is in serious decline.

The children see it clearly and quietly "call it out". The parents ignore their warning.

When Kam is finally caught sleeping at work, the mom must make a difficult decision to search for a new nanny. She holds detailed interviews that all scream "FAIL!"

Kam, suspicious of sudden time off, starts investigating other employers with the help of a local area agency. The same agency "playing" / "vying for both teams."

The children in the meantime take on their own modern day battles with the monsters in their head, the bullies in the halls, and their never-ending demands of the day.

When Kam's body finally succumbs to the weight of the world and that of her own body, the Kings are forced to take over and pick up all the pieces that have just gone flying.

The poignant narrative of a modern day nanny told successively by five distinct characters; all right in their own special way, yet stuck looking in the wrong direction.

"Calvary gave Finn a turtle named Sport and a box of meager possessions, a thin wallet with Chloe's childhood picture, and a Bible with a cryptic poem inside the lining--a treasure map?

"This novel is special. It contains a message and introduces us to realistic characters and places, while it takes us on a journey of discovery. There is danger and intrigue, love and romance, and a murder to solve. I recommend this well-written book. It will help readers learn to recognize those "Thin Places" in the world. " -- Diane Rapp, Amazon reviewer

Just days before his execution, Calvery Thomas has reason to believe in thin places. He looks at the world through the eyes of someone who has already passed on. When he promises Finn Tully a reward to find his daughter and prove his innocence to her, Calvery knows the request is unreasonable. He also knows Finn needs his help, and Calvery's daughter needs the money. Finn is clean, sober, on the downside of a prison term and not about to get swallowed up in Calvery's problems until a series of unexplainable events propel Finn into the middle of the mysteries surrounding Calvery's execution. When Finn finds the daughter, Chloe, in Clam Harbor, Washington, he soon realizes she is in danger. Chloe is a tough, no-nonsense charter boat captain involved in a smuggling operation with the very man who framed her father. Finn and Chloe join forces to find the truth behind Calvery's execution and, in the process, discover the power of a father's love and the miracles of the world beyond this one.

"Author Huw Thomas has quite an engrossing way of presenting this tale. A combination of mystery, thriller, unending suspense, romance, character study-a reader would do well to pick up this one immediately and settle in for an evening's read (or two evenings, as did I.)" -- Mallory Haws, Amazon reviewer

Women are dying… and Danny Harper’s life is in pieces.

Everything is going perfectly for young journalist Danny Harper: a new flat, a career on the up and the girl he loves about to marry him. Then he wakes in hospital to find none of it’s true.

Refusing to admit he’s imagined it all, Harper tries to regain his lost life. But, while his claims are initially dismissed as delusion, he knows secrets that can’t be easily explained.

THIN ICE is the story of what happens when two parallel universes collide – one world where Danny Harper’s life is a success, the other where it’s a mess.

When Harper is involved in an accident his lives flip: the failure ends up in hospital in a coma, the success wakes in a world where all the important things in his life are missing.

Stuck in the ‘wrong’ life, Harper starts trying to deal with this new, alternative existence. But in the process he has to deal with something that casts a new perspective on his problem – a deranged killer with a fanatical obsession for the ‘sins of woman’.

In Danny Harper’s ‘real’ world, the killer has already been caught. But in this alternative world - partly due to a mistake by the 'other' Harper - the killings have so far gone undetected. And the latest victim is a complete innocent.

"I loved the smoldering chemistry between Trace and Regina. The love scenes were very steamy. It was suspenseful but lots laughs a long the way. I love this book. " -- Cindy, Amazon reviewer

Practicing wiccan Regina Moon is starting over in the tiny town of Groves, Arkansas, hoping her New Age shop will succeed despite her friends objections. A ritual-type killing of a local man transforms the quiet little community into 1692 Salem, with all eyes on her, and has the sheriff, Trace Langston not only trying to solve a murder but disbanding a mob of angry townspeople hell-bent on burning her at the stake. In all the upheaval, a cold case, sealed within a circle, is unearthed, and an evil no one knew existed revealed.

A Plate of Bits, by Avis Hickman-Gibb. (Still free?)

Whether you've read flash fiction or not, you may want to download this varied collection of very short stories - free today!

"A delightful collection of every plot imaginable, from nostalgic to futuristic, and literally everything in between, A Plate of Bits explores human dynamics in a way that's funny, defiant, ironic, comical and sad - like a well-stocked smorgasbord, there's something for everyone!" -- RLS, Amazon reviewer

This is a collection of short, and short–short, stories. In a short–short story each word counts. There’s no room for fillers, fat or flab. At their best short-short, or flash, stories are tiny fictional gems, highly polished to expose the true kernel of the idea. But they can also be longer, more richly textured stories. The stories here are all jumbled up in order and presented much as the title suggests - a plate of bits. That is a bit of this, a bit of that and bit of the other – rather like a plate of party buffet food. Enjoy the feast!
