Kindle Fire Free App of the Day: Drawing Pad

Today's Free App of the Day is Drawing Pad
Originally $1.99

This is a basic but attractive art program, probably most appropriate for younger artists. It has several different tools--pencil, crayon, brushes in two sizes, markers, stamps and stickers that you can add, stretch and lock in place. You can undo. You can share to email, Facebook and other apps you have installed on your device. You can save your creation to an album or to your photo gallery on your device. (Access the Album on the Home screen--get there by tapping the home icon within a project.) The major complaint is the inability to change the width of lines drawn by individual tools. For serious art, this is a valid concern and is the reason I think this app is more suitable for younger artists. Previously the Free App of the Day in December 2011, and perhaps since then, but that's when I got it.

761 of 906 reviews are four stars and above.

So we have a bonus pick: Autodesk SketchBook.

As an alternative, this is a slightly more "serious" drawing app without the stamps and stickers of the other app and more choices for tools that let you control the line you are drawing (though you cannot change the line width on individual tools).

51 of 80 reviews are four stars and above.

Compatibility of apps varies. To tell if an app works for your Fire tablet or other Android device registered to your Amazon account, click on the above link and look on the right side of the web page for the "compatible devices" link.

Have fun!

Michelle Mankin is the author of the Black Cat Records series of novels.

Romance with subtext.

Reimagining classic stories with sexy rock stars and thought provoking issues.

For many years she worked in the insurance industry as an underwriter. Somehow, the boredom didn't kill her but the hours and hours of looking at facts and figures provided ample time for her mind to wander.

Black Cat Records in Vancouver provides the central backdrop for all of Michelle’s current novels. Love Evolution, Love Revolution, and Love Resolution are a Brutal Strength centered trilogy, combining the plot underpinnings of Shakespeare with the drama, excitement, and indisputable sexiness of the rock 'n roll industry.

Things take a bit of an edgier, once upon a time turn with the Tempest series. These pierced, tatted, and troubled Seattle rockers are young and on the cusp of making it big, but with serious obstacles to overcome that may prevent them from ever getting there.

When Michelle is not prowling the streets of her Texas town listening to her rock music much too loud, she is putting her daydreams down on paper or traveling the world with her family and friends, sometimes for real, and sometimes just for pretend as she takes the children to school and back.

Ever thought a dream might pass you by?

Nineteen-year old CeCe Mackenzie is determined to make her dreams come true. She heads for Nashville with not much more to her name than a guitar, a Walker Hound named Hank Junior and an old car she'd inherited from her grandma called Gertrude. But when Gertrude ends up on the side of I-40 in flames, Nashville has never seemed farther away. Help arrives in the form of two Georgia football players headed for the Nashville dream as well. When Holden Ashford and Thomas Franklin stop to offer CeCe and Hank Junior a ride, fate may just give a nod to serendipity and meant to be. Because while CeCe is chasing after her dream, she might find love as well.

New Adult Romance where "the characters are so alive you can almost hear them next to you."

Excerpt

Nothing in my life has ever felt as good as Holden's kiss. Not the top of my first roller coaster ride, right before the plunge. Or the first time I performed one of my own songs in front of a crowd. Not even the day my Uncle Dobie said he thought I had a future in country music.

At first, Holden is gentle, kissing me like he's not sure where the line is. I'm the one who deepens it. I loop my arms around his neck and pull him closer, opening my mouth beneath his and inviting him in. He accepts. I've never been kissed like this. Thoroughly. Completely. Expertly.

And that's what it feels like. As if Holden knows exactly how to coax, persuade, entice. A couple minutes of this, and my mind is blanked of everything but him. I explore the ripples of abs. His breathing quickens, and I trace the other side.

He runs his hands down my back and anchors me against him as if he needs me to know what I'm doing to him. Knowing I'm not ready for what I've so clearly asked him for, I pull away and study his far too good-looking face, my chest feeling as if I've just run a marathon.

"I'm sorry, Holden," I say.

He smooths my hair back from my face. "If this ever happens between us, it has to be for the right reasons."

Colin Preston Rocked And Rolled, by Bert Murray
Price: $6.95 $0.00 (save 100%)
259 pages, with a 4.2-star rating from 68 reviews

"Highly recommended! Colin Preston Rocked and Rolled is Bert Murray's impressive debut novel. Beautifully written, it is a coming of age story that should resonate with everyone who has been a college sophomore, dealt with college friendships and known the agony and ecstasy of first love. Murray captures the immaturity, impulsiveness and neediness of adolescents and balances them with portraits of intelligence, sensitivity and caring. The book is often funny, sometimes poignant and always entertaining, a great read!" -- Amazon reviewer

BESTFRIENDS. FIRST LOVE. SECRETS. Beatles-music-obsessed prep school graduate, Colin Preston, is a good guy and a college sophomore at Elerby University. His life changes when he meets wild child Jasmine from Laguna Beach. Green eyes, high cheekbones, long blond hair. Colin thinks she's beautiful. Once they begin dating Colin falls madly in love and believes he has met "the one". However, soon something inexcusable happens that turns Colin's whole world upside down. Inspired by new friends and Beatles songs he begins to search for answers and start over. Nothing will ever be the same.

"Murray draws Colin with immediate emotional pungency, and he doesn't lose the beat even when the situations turn slapstick...A coming-of-age story with plenty of sting, where love is not only blind, but it blindsides." - Kirkus Reviews

"Bert Murray has produced a novel that is simultaneously absorbing, moving and funny - a character-driven page-turner that captures lightning in a bottle, and preserves a moment in time for eternity." - John Altman, author of The Watchmen and A Gathering Of Spies

"With Colin Preston Rocked and Rolled (Davanna), first-time novelist Bert Murray manages a feat that seems to have escaped many writers...a kind of hard-core Catcher in the Rye" - Dan's Papers

"Broken," a New Adult romance by Annie Jocoby

Broken (Nick #1), by Annie Jocoby
Price: $0.99
279 pages, with a 4.1-star rating from 16 reviews

"A must-read. Another great story!! It has a lot of emotions going on in it. Nick does some things that just pissed me off but on the other hand he does have his own issues. There were times I felt sad for him. So many feelings going on in this book which I love. Can't wait to see what happens next." -- Amazon reviewer

Book One of a planned three book trilogy.

Nick O'Hara is, for lack of a better word, a man-wh***. Look in the Urban Dictionary under that word, and his name will no doubt be mentioned. The only qualifications that he looks for in a bed-mate is that the person is hot and breathing. Mainly hot. He has no desire for an emotional connection with another person, and that's the way he lives his life. He has his fabulous wealth and his reputation as a premiere architect, and that's enough for him.

Until Scotty James.

Scotty is a graduate student at Columbia University in New York City. She's broken from traumatic experiences from her years in foster care and homelessness. She has a vulnerability that is intoxicating to Nick, because, deep down, he knows that he is as broken as she.

When Nick pursues Scotty, it seems that she is the only woman who doesn't want to be with him. At first she's a challenge, but Nick soon finds himself falling in love for the first time in his life. With a woman who wants nothing to do with him.

Can Scotty overcome her trust issues and fear to let Nick in? Or will she prove to be too broken to trust?

This is a full-length, 95,000 word, New Adult novel with mature themes.

Meet the Author

Well, I'm just a tad nutty in real life. A bit scattered, a bit of a dreamer, never together. I wanted to originally create a character based upon myself, because I felt that people could relate to somebody who is decidedly imperfect. And have her get the dreamboat man, because, let's face it, we all want that, right ladies? That was my inspiration for the story of Iris and Ryan in my Illusions books. Those novels were so well-received, that I just decided to keep on keeping on. Scotty, the current heroine in my Broken novels, is so much more together than myself. So it’s been fun to write her. And Nick has turned into a revelation – he seems to be a bit of a tough guy who is nothing but a womanizer, but I’ve found his soft side. I’m a little bit, ok a lot, in love with Nick and Ryan myself, and who wouldn’t be? I'm having the time of my life writing these books, and I want to keep on writing them until my fans decide that they've had enough!
